Tests and scores

Which GL tests UAE schools use, year by year

CAT4, NGRT, PTM, PTE, PTS: a British-curriculum school in the UAE can give your child several GL tests a year. Here is which ones, in which year groups, and why.

Dubai: CAT4 in Years 4, 6, 8 and 10; NGRT reading tests three times a year from Year 2 to Year 10; GL Progress Tests in English, maths and science from Year 4 to Year 10.

Abu Dhabi: GL Progress Tests are mandatory for British schools in Years 4 to 10; cognitive tests such as CAT4 are encouraged.

Sharjah and the northern emirates: CAT4 plus Progress Tests, which start in Year 2 in Ajman, Fujairah, Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al Khaimah.

Why UAE schools use these tests

The regulators in Dubai and Abu Dhabi require private schools to measure students against external benchmarks, not only their own exams. In Dubai, KHDA said that even while it paused full inspections for 2025-26, all schools were expected to keep running external benchmark assessments. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's assessment policy names the benchmark test each curriculum must use, and requires at least 97% of eligible students in Years 4 to 10 to take it.

The three GL tests do different jobs:

This is what GL's guide says KHDA expects for 2026-27:

Schools that are not British-curriculum

Benchmark tests depend on the curriculum. ADEK's policy for Abu Dhabi lists these mandatory tests, which give a sense of what other schools use:

ADEK's policy also lists international studies such as PISA, TIMSS and PIRLS, which are run periodically to compare students' performance nationally and internationally.

What happens to the results

  • The regulator sees them. GL says all UAE schools that test with it sign a data-sharing agreement, and all testing data is shared with the regulator. In Abu Dhabi, results go to ADEK directly from the provider.
  • Schools use them to plan. ADEK's policy tells schools to analyse results, set targets and plan support for children who need it and challenge for those doing well.
  • You can ask for the parent report. GL produces an individual report for parents for each test. If you have only been told a number, ask the school for it.
  • Some schools count them in school marks. That is each school's decision. One Dubai school told parents in 2026 that GL Progress Test results contribute to final exam marks.

Questions parents ask

Which GL tests does my child sit at a British school in Dubai?

According to GL's guide for UAE schools, KHDA expects CAT4 in Years 4, 6, 8 and 10 (in the autumn term), the New Group Reading Test three times a year from Year 2 to Year 10, and GL Progress Tests in English, maths and science from Year 4 to Year 10 in May and June. Year 7 has no science Progress Test.

Is CAT4 compulsory in Abu Dhabi?

ADEK's assessment policy makes a benchmark attainment test compulsory (GL Progress Tests for British schools) and encourages schools to use a cognitive test of their choice, such as CAT4. GL's guide describes cognitive tests in Abu Dhabi as recommended.

Do parents pay for GL tests in the UAE?

In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's policy says schools pay for the mandatory benchmark tests and may not charge parents a separate fee; the same applies to optional cognitive tests. In other emirates it depends on the school and your parent contract.

Who sees my child's GL results?

GL says every school that tests in the UAE signs a data-sharing agreement, so results (including archived data) are shared with the regulator. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's policy says benchmark results go to ADEK directly from the test provider. Your school receives the reports, including a report written for parents.

What is ACER IBT?

The International Benchmark Tests from ACER (the Australian Council for Educational Research). In Abu Dhabi, ADEK lists ACER IBT as an option for Indian-curriculum and IB schools and as the benchmark test for Ministry of Education curriculum schools, in Arabic, maths and science.

Where do PISA, TIMSS and PIRLS fit in?

ADEK's policy lists PISA, TIMSS and PIRLS as international assessments that are run periodically to compare student performance nationally and internationally. They are separate from the yearly GL tests.
