IGCSE vs GCSE
Your child's school in the UAE may offer GCSEs, IGCSEs or a mix. Here is what actually differs, what does not, and whether it matters for university.
Both are taken at 14 to 16, usually across Years 10 and 11, and the exam boards say their IGCSEs are set to the same standard as GCSEs in England.
The differences: GCSEs are regulated by Ofqual and written for schools in England; IGCSEs are designed for international schools, are not regulated by Ofqual and have more exam dates. UK universities accept both.
Side by side
| GCSE | International GCSE (IGCSE) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it is for | Schools in England (and some international schools) | Schools outside the UK, and some UK independent schools |
| Regulator | Ofqual, the exams regulator for England | Not Ofqual: each exam board regulates its own |
| Main boards | AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR and others | Cambridge, Pearson Edexcel, OxfordAQA |
| Grades | 9 to 1 | 9 to 1 (Pearson, OxfordAQA); A* to G or 9 to 1 (Cambridge) |
| Exam series | May/June | Summer, plus November for Cambridge and Pearson |
| Assessment | Mostly exams at the end of the course | Mostly exams at the end of the course; some subjects have coursework, orals or practicals |
| Content | Written for schools in England | Built on the UK GCSE curriculum, adapted with international content (Pearson's description) |
What 'the same standard' means
Cambridge says it aligns the standard of Cambridge IGCSE with the GCSE qualification taken in England. Pearson says its International GCSEs are built on the UK GCSE curriculum, adapted with local and international content, and that in April 2019 UK NARIC (the UK government's agency for comparing qualifications) confirmed they meet the UK GCSE standard. OxfordAQA describes International GCSEs as equivalent to UK GCSEs with an international perspective.
So the question 'which is harder?' has no official answer. In practice the subject, the tier (for example Foundation or Higher maths) and the specification matter far more than whether the certificate says GCSE or IGCSE.
Who regulates them
Ofqual regulates GCSEs in England. OxfordAQA points out that Ofqual does not regulate International GCSEs or A levels from any exam board. Pearson describes its International GCSEs as regulated by Pearson itself, and says its international certificates state clearly that they are international qualifications and carry no Ofqual logo. None of this stops universities accepting them (see below).
The exam boards in the UAE
OxfordAQA says that for schools in the Middle East and the Gulf there are three main International GCSE, AS and A level providers: Cambridge, Pearson Edexcel and OxfordAQA. Some international schools also enter pupils for UK GCSEs from boards such as AQA or Pearson Edexcel.
Which board your child sits varies by school and often by subject. As one example, GEMS Founders School Al Barsha in Dubai lists AQA and Pearson Edexcel as its exam boards for International GCSE and GCSE in its 2024 to 2026 options booklet. Your school's options booklet or exams officer can tell you the board and syllabus code for each subject.
Grades
UK GCSEs, Pearson Edexcel International GCSEs and OxfordAQA International GCSEs are graded 9 to 1. Cambridge IGCSE is graded A* to G worldwide, and Cambridge offers 9 to 1 versions of many subjects to schools in one of its administrative zones, so a Cambridge certificate may show either. The two scales meet at fixed points: a 7 lines up with an A, a 4 with a C and a 1 with a G. Full details are in GCSE and IGCSE grades explained.
Exam dates
Pearson lists its UK GCSE exams in May/June. International boards add other series: Cambridge runs IGCSE exams in June and November, and Pearson offers International GCSEs in May/June and November. This can allow a resit or an early entry, but your school decides which series it uses. See exam series and results days in the UAE.
How universities treat them
- UK universities. UCL requires GCSE 'or equivalent' passes in English Language and maths at grade 4 or C for all undergraduate programmes (2026-27). Pearson says its International GCSEs are accepted grade for grade as GCSE equivalents at all UK universities, including Oxford and Cambridge. Oxford says applicants do not need GCSEs or IGCSEs at all, but should include any results they have.
- UAE universities. The UAE Ministry of Education's equivalency certificate accepts GCSE or IGCSE: five approved subjects at grade E or 3 or above, plus AS or A level passes.
For GCSE and IGCSE results, the subjects and grades in English and maths usually matter more to universities than the label on the certificate. For subject choices, see Year 9 options.
Questions parents ask
What is the difference between IGCSE and GCSE?
Both are taken by students aged about 14 to 16, usually over Years 10 and 11, and both are mostly assessed by exams. GCSEs are the qualifications taken in schools in England and are regulated by Ofqual. International GCSEs (IGCSEs) are designed for schools outside the UK, with international content and extra exam series, and are not regulated by Ofqual. The boards say their IGCSEs are set to the same standard as GCSEs in England.
Is IGCSE harder than GCSE?
There is no official answer. Cambridge says it aligns the standard of Cambridge IGCSE with the GCSE taken in England, and Pearson says UK NARIC confirmed its International GCSEs meet the UK GCSE standard. Difficulty in practice depends more on the subject, the tier and the specification your child sits than on the label.
Do UK universities accept IGCSEs?
Yes. UCL, for example, asks for GCSE 'or equivalent' passes in English Language and maths, and Pearson says its International GCSEs are accepted grade for grade as GCSE equivalents at all UK universities. Oxford says you do not need GCSEs or IGCSEs to apply at all, although it is useful to show earlier results.
Is IGCSE the same as O level?
No. Cambridge still offers Cambridge O Level and Cambridge IGCSE as separate qualifications, with separate exam timetables. If your child's school offers O levels, ask how universities it sends students to treat them.
Which exam boards do UAE British schools use for IGCSE?
It varies by school and often by subject. The three main international boards in the region are Cambridge, Pearson Edexcel and OxfordAQA. Some schools also enter pupils for UK GCSEs from boards such as AQA or Pearson Edexcel. Your school's options booklet lists the board for each subject.
Are IGCSEs accepted for the UAE equivalency certificate?
Yes. The UAE Ministry of Education accepts GCSE or IGCSE: it needs five approved subjects at grade E or 3 or above, plus AS or A level passes. Arabic and Islamic Studies do not count towards the five.
